La Paz Waterfall Garden in Alajuela, Costa Rica is one of those places
that really connect you with the Nature. I visited the Nature Park and
its Wild Refuge and after a nice walking tour I arrived to the
Waterfalls, all in one place in just a couple of hours.
I live in the province where La Paz Waterfall Garden is
located and had an idea about how to get there, however if you don’t
live in Costa Rica its not a big issue to get to their place, it will
just take you around one hour of driving time from Juan Santamaria
International Airport or any hotel in Alajuela.
if you plan to rent a car, just make sure to ask
costaricans on the road if you are going on the way to Vara Blanca or
Cinchona, otherwise you might be driving to the Poas Volcano; practice
your Spanish, we always cooperate with visitors.
Use one of the next questions in Spanish: 1-
preguntita. Por aqui voy bien hacia la Catarata de la
Paz”? ( Excuse me, a small question. Am I on the correct
way to “La
Paz” Waterfall ? 2-
“Disculpe, ya pase Vara
Blanca”? ( Excuse me, Did I already pass Vara
Blanca”. If the answer is Yes, you are safe. If the answer is No, and
you see a nice scenic driving up the hills, my friend you are about to
see the glorious Poas Volcano, and Yes, ‘you are lost’.
Magia Blanca is just one of
Once there you will receive 2 things: a nice map and a colorful
The map is a great resource that will guide you easily around the
property and depending on what you like the most you can start by the
aviary, the monkey place, the butterflies section or the Big Trout bar;
but don't be lazy, leave the bar for the afternoon.
I started with the Monkeys Pass, don’t ask me why; then I visited the
Butterfly Observatory where I saw a lot of Morph’s, also watched a nice
5m but interesting video about the cycle of a Butterfly. Continuing
with the walking tour I arrived to the aviary, here you can see species
like Toucans, Macaws and a special spot for Hummingbirds.
If you feel brave turn right and go to the wild side: snakes, jungle
cats and frogs will be awaiting you after having lunch at the Colibries
Restaurant which is located in the middle. If the ‘Wild’ mood is not
your thing then take it easy and stop to take pictures of the diversity
of Flowers and Orchids in La Paz Waterfall Gardens.
And finally take a breath, close your eyes and immerse in the Forest
where you will discover what Costa Rica is all about…Nature and Magical
Spots that can not be recorder in other place better that in your mind;
cross a bridge and you will be in front of Templo Waterfall, take a
picture right behind Magia Blanca or move forward too see the other
Three Waterfalls at the end of the Trail; and if you liked the tour, do
it twice as I did.
